Van Persie's late show earns United win at Saints

LONDON (AP) — Robin van Persie made up for an embarrassing failure from the penalty spot by grabbing a hat trick with two late goals in the play of the two tough opponents  Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday, earning the English giants a second straight win in the Premier League.

In a fitting way to mark United manager Alex Ferguson's 1,000th league game in charge, Van Persie equalized in the 87th minute before heading home a corner in the second minute of injury time for his fourth goal since joining from Arsenal for 24 million pounds ($38 million) in the offseason.

Arsenal showed earlier there is life after Van Persie when new signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla scored their first goals for the club in a 2-0 win over struggling Liverpool. The loss leaves Liverpool rooted in the bottom three after the club's worst start to a season in 50 years, compounding its woes after a failure to add some much-needed signings to the squad on Friday's transfer deadline day.

In the day's other match, Aston Villa earned its first point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, only being denied victory because of Hatem Ben Arfa's stunning second-half equalizer. Van Persie's late show, which took him to 100 Premier League goals in 197 games, will have come as a mighty relief for the Netherlands striker, after his impudent chipped penalty was clawed away by goalkeeper Kelvin Davis in the 68th minute.

The score was 2-1 to Southampton at the time and United looked headed for a second loss in three games before Van Persie's last-gasp intervention. "I don't know what I was thinking with the penalty. I was going to hit it hard but at the last second I changed my mind," Van Persie said. "I'm quite disappointed about it. I ask certain standards from my game and at 2-1 down you cannot take a penalty like that."

Ferguson, famous for what the British media calls the "hairdryer treatment" in the dressing room when his team or player underperforms, was all smiles after the match despite Van Persie's error of judgment.

"I was surprised because every time I've seen him take a penalty he usually rattles it into the corners, so I was confident," Ferguson said. "But he made up for it." Having started the season with a 1-0 loss at Everton, this win lifted United up to fifth place on six points, one behind neighbor and reigning champion Manchester City and three behind early leader Chelsea.

Arsenal is in eighth place, a point further back than United. United's defense looked shaky throughout at St. Mary's Stadium, with both of promoted Southampton's goals stemming from crosses to the back post where United's full backs were outwitted.

Rickie Lambert put the hosts in front in the 16th, beating Rafael da Silva in the air and heading home a trademark finish. Van Persie equalized when he chested down a cross from Antonio Valencia and volleyed into the corner. But Southampton regained the lead in the 56th through Morgan Schneiderlin, beating a slipping Patrice Evra to a cross and planting a header into the corner.

"We have to take positives from our performance," said Southampton manager Nigel Adkins, whose side is the only one in the Premier League without a point. "We are scoring goals and what we have to do is stop conceding them at the other end."

The game changed when Ferguson sent on Paul Scholes in the 61st, with Southampton suddenly backing off and allowing the veteran midfielder to control play. The Liverpool-Arsenal match was already being seen as a must-win game for both teams, and it was the visitors who sealed their first win and goals of the season with an encouraging display at Anfield.

Podolski, the Germany forward, and Cazorla, the Spain midfielder, set each other up for their goals, while fit-again midfielder Abou Diaby was the standout player on the pitch and Arsenal also kept a third straight clean sheet.

"The sharpness gets better from game to game and we looked solid and scored two good goals," Arsenal manager Wenger said. "''Everybody understood quickly Cazorla would not need six months to settle. Lukas Podolski is deadly when he gets a chance. I am pleased for them."

Liverpool lacked a cutting edge up front, and failing to sign a striker this week after loaning out Andy Carroll to West Ham could come back to haunt manager Brendan Rodgers. "I am not here to cry," Rodgers said. "I felt we needed reinforcements — that is the reality. But it is gone now. The window is shut."

“I thought it was a brilliant performance. We were asked a lot of questions and I thought the players were incredible. Some times the best team doesn’t win.“Let’s remember we were playing a good side.”

This was the fourth game in a row where City had conceded two goals and manager Roberto Mancini said: “This is the time to finish conceding two goals every game. “But we have taken one point when we went down two times,” the Italian added.

Earlier, Arsenal failed to score for the second league match in a row following the departure of star striker Robin van Persie to Manchester United as they were held to a goalless draw away to Stoke.

“It is not good enough,” said Arsenal midfielder Mikel Arteta after the Gunners’ second straight 0-0 stalemate.“We had some really good chances but at the moment we are not taking them. The same thing happened last week.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was pleased by his side’s defensive performance but said he was looking to bring in more players to the London club before Friday’s transfer deadline.“I’m pleased with what I have, but yes, I anticipate that we will do something still,” Wenger said.“We are still in the market. Defensive midfielder, it depends on the quality of the players available.”

What bettors need to know: NFL Week 3 preseason

There are three preseason games Thursday night in the NFL and we give you a quick breakdown on the essentials for each one. This should be a big week for a lot of teams as they look to trim their rosters to 75 by Monday.

Green Bay at Cincinnati (+3, 45)

Green Bay has lost straight up and failed to cover the spread in its first two preseason games. The good news is they enter Week 3 the healthiest they’ve been all preseason and they’d like to come away with a win from Cincinnati. Head coach Mike McCarthy says his first stringers will play the first half and then he’ll give other guys a chance to make their mark in the second half.

The Bengals say they’re not approaching this week as a ‘dress rehearsal’ just like last week when the first team was in for 29 plays. Cincy is saying it will keep the first teamers on the field into the third quarter.  The Bengals have won and covered in their first two preseason games.

It’s worth noting the total opened at 42.5 for this game and has since shot to 45 points, the highest total of any NFL preseason game this week.

Baltimore at Jacksonville ( -7, 41)

Jacksonville has moved into regular season mode in their practice habits. The Jags have put up two scoreboards at opposite ends of the field with 40 second clocks and they are pumping in crowd noise to their scrimmage sessions. Coach Mike Mularky says Chad Henne will remain the backup QB despite the fact Jordan Palmer has led the team to fourth-quarter, game-winning drives in the last two preseason games.  Off the field, the Maurice Jones-Drew holdout issue remains a distraction and his fines totaled $840,000 as of Wednesday.

Baltimore coach John Harbaugh says his starters will play into the second half Thursday. The Ravens still have some spots up for grabs though at left guard, cornerback, nose tackle and a couple of other spots.

Arizona at Tennessee (-3, 42.5)

The Cardinals are the only team with three losses against the spread in the preseason so far. (The Saints are the only other team to have played three games.) The Cards are going to play their starters into the second half on Thursday and we’ll also get another chance to see the least appealing quarterback battle in the NFL unfold again. John Skelton will get the start but head coach Ken Whisenhunt says Kevin Kolb will also see some time with the first string.

The big news this week for Tennessee was the team announced rookie Jake Locker out of Washington would be its starting quarterback. Locker brings a versatile threat in the backfield but he has accuracy issues, converting just 45 percent of his passes so far. He wasn’t much better in college at just over 50 percent so you can bet the Titans will be working on passing. Locker didn’t look too sharp in his first NFL start last week when he went 4-of-11 for 21 yards. Tennessee is facing several injuries on defense for this game so that could effect their game plan on that side of the ball.

Man City confirm Rodwell signing

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jack Rodwell from Everton for £12m.

The 21-year-old has signed on a five-year deal and the fee could rise to £17m.

Rodwell completed a medical with the Premier League champions on Sunday before signing a deal to become Roberto Mancini’s first signing of the summer.

“Man City are a massive club, the league champions, so it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s a dream come true,”

Rodwell told www.mcfc.co.uk.

He joins up with England for Wednesday’s friendly against Italy, but will be available for Manchester City’s opening game of the season against newly promoted Southampton at the weekend.

“It will be an amazing experience to make my debut in front of them [Manchester City supporters] if I am selected to play next weekend,” he added.

“Obviously I knew the squad is immense with talent here but I believe in my ability. I’ve just got to work my way into the manager’s plans and hopefully things will go well.

“The hard work starts today as I start to help contribute to the club winning more silverware. The season has started really well with the Community Shield win.”

Rodwell rose through Everton’s youth system after joining the Premier League club at the age of seven.

He represented England at four junior levels before making his senior

debut in the friendly win over Spain in November 2011,

replacing Phil Jones as a 56th-minute substitute.

Three days later, Rodwell started his first full international,

playing 58 minutes against Sweden

before being replaced by James Milner.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to everyone at Everton. The manager David Moyes has been brilliant for me and helped make me the player that I am today,” said Rodwell.

“I have a special relationship with the chairman, Bill Kenwright, who did not want me to leave.”

Rodwell revealed that despite his long-standing ties to the Toffees, talks about a move to City had been going on for a while.

“It’s been kept under wraps quite nicely. It’s been going on for the past couple of weeks but the last couple of days it’s progressed really quickly. I’m just pleased it’s done,” he added.

Rodwell is Manchester City’s only high-profile new arrival this summer, although the club have been linked with transfers for

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger.

He will add depth to a City midfield department without England international Gareth Barry, who has a hip problem, while Nigel de Jong is stalling over a new deal.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has attracted interest from Bayern Munich.

Both forward additions Giroud and Podolski will bring alot of attacking talent to the team and will at least replace some of the goals Van Persie brings if the dutchman does leave. Alot of Arsenal's youngsters were involved this year in both the Olympics and the European Championships and there may be some fatigue to play a part in the teams preparation for the Premier League kick off. Mikael Arteta, Oxlade Chamberlain, Ramsey, Song and Walcott though will be a formidable midfield for any team to face and Jack Wilshire will also be coming into the side at some point in the coming weeks.

Sunderland have had a very quiet transfer window only one player has come in Carlos Cuellar from Aston Villa, Martin O'Neill ccoahced Cuellar at Villa and knows all about him. Sunderland though have lost Nicolas Bendtner who has gone back to Arsenal from his succesful loan spell last season. So up front the Black Cats will be reliant on Frazer Campbell Conor Wickham and Dong won Ji. The average age of the Sunderland strikers is 21, very young and not alot of experience there but there is lots of talent in this young sunderland side and they have experience at the back with Titus Bramble, John O'Shea, Wes Brown and Cuellar. 

Personally I think this game is a tough one to call. Arsenal on paper anyway look to have strengthened significantly since last season but their pre season thus far has not been all that impressive. Robin Van Persie still hasnt committed to the club going forward and he really is a vital cog for the Gunners. As of now though Van Persie is still and Arsenal player and I think Arsenal as a whole will be too strong for Sunderland. Take Arsenal -1 on the handicap as the Gunners open up their new season with a comfortable win.

Joe Allen nationality error, Organisers Forced to reprint programmes

London 2012 organisers have been forced to print new official programmes for future Great Britain football matches after listing Welshman Joe Allen as English.

Organisers have apologised for the error in the listing of the 22-year-old Swansea and Wales midfielder.

A London 2012 spokeswoman said: "There was an error in our programme and we inadvertently listed Joe Allen as English. We apologise for this mistake and new programmes are now being printed with the correction in time for Team GB's next match."

The British Olympic Association were responsible for a similar blunder last night with an email reporting Great Britain women's victory over New Zealand being titled "England women on their way".

Majestic Italy exceeds expectations - Review Again

Four years ago, Italy went out at this stage of the competition to Spain after a shootout and there were fears that Sunday would be déjà vu. Consider that disappointment avenged.
Italy made hard work of it Sunday night, but it is through to the semifinals of Euro 2012 — and deservedly so — after victory on penalties over England. Alessandro Diamanti showed great poise to strike home the decisive spot kick in Kiev and booked his team a place on a flight to Warsaw where it will face Germany on Thursday.
For a time, though, it really felt like it wouldn’t be Italy’s night and that it would be made to rue missed chances. One opportunity after another went begging; Daniele De Rossi sliced a long-range effort against the upright; Mario Balotelli skied an effort over the bar from five yards among other spurned attempts; Diamanti curled a shot past the post in extra time; Antonio Nocerino had a headed goal disallowed in extra time.
Football’s Gods appeared to be smiling on England and a repeat of Chelsea’s backs-to-the-wall path to improbable glory in the Champions League last month seemed to be the more likely outcome. Let it not be forgotten that Italy’s past record in penalties is hardly better than that of its opponents. While it won the World Cup from the spot in 2006, it’s also true it has prevailed in only two of its last seven.
Italy did not want it to go this way. “It would definitely be better for all of us to try to close out the match beforehand,” Buffon said earlier this week, “but if it goes to penalties so be it.”
Italy tried everything to win in normal time. From the second half onwards, its domination was near total. But Italy huffed and puffed and still couldn’t blow the house down, holding 68-percent possession of the ball. Italy completed 744 of 833 passes and no fewer than 36 shots were fired in England’s direction. Tellingly only eight were on target, which again brings us back to the difficulty Italy have had throughout Euro 2012 in converting the many openings it creates.


Even so, Andrea Pirlo was majestic Sunday night. At times, it felt as though he was not wearing a football uniform at all but rather a tuxedo and waving a baton, as he conducted an orchestra from midfield. It was one of the performances of the competition so far. Pirlos’s icing on the cake was his exquisite Antonin Panenka-inspired chipped penalty.

Reflecting on Italy’s display, manager Cesare Prandelli can again feel vindicated. His decision to repudiate the country’s tradition of playing defensive, counter-attacking football and instead implement a more positive, attacking approach that seeks to entertain the public is worthy of commendation. Many neutrals have been won over by Italy and spoken of how they enjoyed watching them, for instance, against Spain.
Prandelli has presented a different Italy to the world, one that better represents and chimes with a country’s wide creative heritage, appreciable in its contributions to art, fashion and manufacturing. From that perspective, their Euro 2012 campaign already deserves to be considered a relative success.

After all, Italy started out in this competition amid low expectations; its preparations were overshadowed by scandal; their squad depleted by injury; and accordingly many of the best laid plans Prandelli had settled upon through qualifying went awry and needed a last minute review. At the time, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote: “If you’re going to Poland don’t book beyond June 18, the last day of the group stages.” Well, to their immense credit, they’ve lasted well beyond that point.
Now a semifinal with Germany awaits Italy. While the consensus among many of those watching is that they’ll be the underdogs, it’s worth recalling that their past encounters are better remembered in Rome, Naples, Turin and Milan than in Berlin, Munich, Dortmund and Hamburg. The reason for that is simple: Italy have never once lost to Germany in a major tournament. As far as they’re concerned, there are nothing but good memories to draw upon; a 3-1 triumph in the 1982 World Cup final — immortalized by Marco Tardelli’s ecstatic goal celebration — and, more recently, a 2-0 victory in extra time in the 2006 World Cup semifinal — sealed by Alessandro Del Piero on a thrilling breakaway.
Italy is Germany’s bogey team. The question is can they remain as such or will the hold be lifted?
