Stoke continue their daunting start to the 2012-13 season when they visit Chelsea on Saturday but have the confidence of knowing they have emerged unbeaten from games so far against Arsenal and Manchester City.

Begovic helped preserve a point against the champions with two outstanding saves while Crouch, who is not in Roy Hodgson's England plans after he rejected a call-up to the standby list for Euro 2012, scored his third goal in three appearances.

Competition for places is hotting up in the Potteries with Michael Owen's high-profile arrival and the keeper said: "We are trying to grow as a team and this is a good place to be. Steven N'Zonzi was fantastic on his debut and, with Owen coming in, we can look forward to a good season."

He added: "I'm surprised Crouch isn't in the England team. Obviously, I'm biased because I see him in training all week but I think he should be there.

"I see the games they (England) are playing. He's sitting at home and I wonder just why isn't he playing. It's not up to me but he doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves. He's a world-class striker.

"His goal ratio, and everything he has done for teams, just speaks for itself. We know what we have with Crouchie and that's the main thing."

Begovic was delighted with the work of the men in front of him on Saturday and knows more of the same resilience is likely to be required both at Stamford Bridge and beyond.

Stoke have four draws from four Premier League games and visit Liverpool and Manchester United for their first two matches in October.

"We kept the door closed at the back (against City)," he added. "We were really solid. Performances speak for themselves but we want to get to winning ways as soon as possible."

Everton 2 Newcastle 2: Ba earns late point but Toffees fume over TWO disallowed goals

T should have been a night when the talk was about enthralling sport, emotional support and a game that epitomised all that is good about English football.

Instead, an old debate has been re-opened and this time, the bodies that govern the game will be under pressure to act fast.

After another calamitous mistake, one which deprived Everton of a richly deserved victory, the clamour for the introduction of goal-line  technology has reached new levels.

The Premier League have said they want to bring it in to play ‘as soon as is practically possible’ and, after this draw, Everton manager David Moyes was asking for it to happen even quicker.

The Scot understandably, was shattered that his team failed  to collect three points from an  absorbing tussle. With better  fortune and arguably better  officiating, Victor Anichebe and Marouane Fellaini would have put Everton out of reach.

‘I thought we had a couple of goals in the game that should have counted,’ said Moyes, referring to a header from Anichebe late in the second half that TV replays clearly showed to have crossed the line, and a strike from Fellaini that was wrongly adjudged offside.
‘The linesman is standing on the line, so you hope he sees it. I don’t know how he has missed them.

‘I told him after the game he had cost us a couple of goals. But there is nothing I can do about it. Technology will eventually come in.’

Significantly, his opposite number was in total agreement.

‘My technical team told me it was over the line,’ said Newcastle boss Alan Pardew, referring to  Anichebe’s 79th-minute header. ‘I have been saying for as long as anyone that technology must come in. It has cost Everton a crucial goal.’
It was such a shame that this topic ended up as the talking point. Everton for much of the contest were outstanding, playing with verve and swagger, but Newcastle made just as big a contribution in the second period.

Here were two fine sides, playing football in the spirit it is intended.

A draw may have been the final outcome, Demba Ba’s double  cancelling out efforts from Leighton Baines and Anichebe, but it was an evening when football emerged  victorious.

This was the first game played on Merseyside since the  revelations about the Hillsborough disaster were published and, as was the case when they provided the opposition for Liverpool in their first game after the tragedy in 1989, Everton covered themselves in glory.
It has been a hugely emotional week on Merseyside. For all the joy and relief that came from Liverpool fans being exonerated by the Hillsborough Independent Panel, there remains pain and disbelief about the horrors that unfolded on the Leppings Lane terrace.

How best to mark the occasion was clearly something Everton had thought long and hard about. The display was wonderfully poignant and dignified without being sentimental and was a fitting tribute to their Red brothers and sisters.

Here, in raw, touching terms, was Merseyside standing united.
It had been mooted that You’ll Never Walk Alone would be played before kick-off but, instead, it was perhaps more fitting that The  Hollies’ He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother rang out when the 96 names were shown on screens at either end of the stadium.

Their tribute was widely  commended and, soon after, so was the football Everton produced.

‘We were shocking,’ fumed Pardew,  who watched the game from the directors’ box, as he was serving the first of a two-game touchline ban. ‘The first half was as bad as we have been in my time here.’

Only a linesman’s flag prevented Everton from taking a third-minute lead but on this occasion the decision was correct. Nikica Jelavic had strayed offside just before Fellaini’s shot had been parried by Harper.

The reprieve was only temporary as Baines gave Everton a 15th-minute lead. He exchanged passes with Fellaini before doing likewise with Steven Pienaar before smashing a drive beyond Harper.

Everton wasted good chances before the break and they were made to pay shortly after it when Ba, who came on as a substitute for Sylvain Marveaux, swept in after some poor defending.

But Everton came back and, as Moyes said, should have been rewarded only for Fellaini to be wrongly ruled offside when running on to a Pienaar pass and then the same assistant, Ceri Richards,  failing to spot Anichebe’s header crossing the line.

When Anichebe pounced in the 88th minute, it looked as if Everton had got their rewards but Ba had the final word, applying the  dramatic end to a whirlwind night.

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Everton was held to a 2-2 draw by Newcastle in the Premier League on Monday after having a goal disallowed despite the ball appearing to cross the line before being cleared.

The score was 1-1 when Everton forward Victor Anichebe's header hit the underside of the crossbar and the ball seemingly dropped over the line before Newcastle defender Mike Williamson kicked it away in the 78th minute at Goodison Park.

"It's a difficult call, but if you're a linesman on the goal line you would hope you would see if the ball goes over the line — that's your job," Everton manager David Moyes said. Anichebe looked to have rendered the decision meaningless when he made it 2-1 in the 88th, but second-half Newcastle replacement Demba Ba scored the second of his two goals less than two minutes later to secure a point for the visitors.

"It was good to get a draw because it was difficult," Ba said. "Last season here it was very difficult, and tonight the first half was the same. But the second half was very different." Ba earlier scored in the 49th to cancel out Everton defender Leighton Baines' 15th-minute opener.

Baines gave Everton the lead by performing a one-two with Steven Pienaar before charging into the box and rifling a shot on his favored left foot past goalkeeper Steve Harper. Baines and Pienaar were a constant menace down Everton's left flank, forcing Newcastle manager Alan Pardew to replace right winger Sylvain Marveaux with the more attack-minded Ba at halftime.

"Sometimes players play better when they're angry," Pardew said. It took Ba only four minutes to equalize, the Senegal striker hitting a first-time strike beyond goalkeeper Tim Howard after getting on the end of a defense-splitting pass from Yohan Cabaye.

The linesman who failed to signal the ball was over the line also ruled Everton forward Marouane Fellaini was offside when finding the net in the 60th minute, another marginal decision that appeared to be tough on the hosts.

"It was really good play and sometimes you need decisions to go for you, and they didn't tonight," Moyes said. Anichebe shrugged off any disappointment to restore Everton's lead, cleverly turning in the box after receiving Pienaar's pass and leaving Harper motionless with a left-footed shot.

However, Newcastle went up the other end of the field for Ba to collect forward partner Papiss Cisse's knock-down and scuff the ball into the net. It was the third goal of the campaign for Ba, who scored 16 times in the league in his first season for Newcastle in 2011-12.

Everton rose one spot to eighth in the standings, three points behind leader Chelsea. Newcastle moved up two places to 11th, five off the pace after four rounds. "Our play was very good and I thought we should have taken all three points, and we didn't," Moyes said.

Wenger’s comments are in line with the Premier League club chairpersons’ meeting held on Thursday. The chairpersons gathered to talk about implementing possible measures that can control the way clubs spend their money on players. Ideas presented during the meeting will meet a deliberation process before this year ends.

The chairpersons concluded the meeting without arriving at any decision. West Ham United co-owner David Gold remarked that most of those who are present in the meeting agreed that it is proper to establish measures that will monitor and regulate spending within the clubs.

Gold said that around 14 or more clubs agreed with the idea of creating regulations in club spending. That meets the minimum requirement of 14 agreeing clubs needed for the league to start making the rules. Chelsea, Manchester City, Fulham and Everton were among the clubs identified to be in disagreement with the idea of imposing spending limitations.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is currently out of the squad to recover from a nasty gash in his thigh following from his side’s league game win over Fulham. His newest book tells more about what people can possibly expect from him in the course of his career.

Rooney’s My Decade in the Premier League reveals interesting aspects of his career as United’s centre forward. The striker recalled a 2009 event in which he gained seven pounds due to drinking alcohol at the start of the league season. He described himself as one who does not differ from any person who would normally gain two or three pounds during summertime, but he caught himself in disbelief when he realized that he gained more that he should.

He cited Ryan Giggs as his opposite, dubbing him as someone who is “all bone and lean muscle”. Recognizing that he gains weight very easily, he followed up by saying that he had no problem getting back in shape. Later on, he pointed to United’s tight discipline as the hardest part of maintaining his fitness.

Remarking that his role as United’s striker demands great energy, he recalled how he dealt with physical beatings resulting from several injuries and playign against tough oponnent centre-backs, giving him a hard time to wake up on mornings after matches. He said that in his role, “there’s no place to hide”, particularly with United’s rigid standards.

Although Rooney spoke about his injury ordeals, he said that he is not afraid to get one that can possibly end his career, but he fears that he might be “forgotten” at United each time he needs to be sidelined. He continued by bringing up his confrontation with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who punished him last year with a fine and exclusion from the first team in their next match due to lack of proper practice following a 5-0 win against Wigan Athletic on Boxing Day.

Man City confirm Rodwell signing

Manchester City have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jack Rodwell from Everton for £12m.

The 21-year-old has signed on a five-year deal and the fee could rise to £17m.

Rodwell completed a medical with the Premier League champions on Sunday before signing a deal to become Roberto Mancini’s first signing of the summer.

“Man City are a massive club, the league champions, so it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. It’s a dream come true,”

Rodwell told www.mcfc.co.uk.

He joins up with England for Wednesday’s friendly against Italy, but will be available for Manchester City’s opening game of the season against newly promoted Southampton at the weekend.

“It will be an amazing experience to make my debut in front of them [Manchester City supporters] if I am selected to play next weekend,” he added.

“Obviously I knew the squad is immense with talent here but I believe in my ability. I’ve just got to work my way into the manager’s plans and hopefully things will go well.

“The hard work starts today as I start to help contribute to the club winning more silverware. The season has started really well with the Community Shield win.”

Rodwell rose through Everton’s youth system after joining the Premier League club at the age of seven.

He represented England at four junior levels before making his senior

debut in the friendly win over Spain in November 2011,

replacing Phil Jones as a 56th-minute substitute.

Three days later, Rodwell started his first full international,

playing 58 minutes against Sweden

before being replaced by James Milner.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to everyone at Everton. The manager David Moyes has been brilliant for me and helped make me the player that I am today,” said Rodwell.

“I have a special relationship with the chairman, Bill Kenwright, who did not want me to leave.”

Rodwell revealed that despite his long-standing ties to the Toffees, talks about a move to City had been going on for a while.

“It’s been kept under wraps quite nicely. It’s been going on for the past couple of weeks but the last couple of days it’s progressed really quickly. I’m just pleased it’s done,” he added.

Rodwell is Manchester City’s only high-profile new arrival this summer, although the club have been linked with transfers for

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and Liverpool centre-back Daniel Agger.

He will add depth to a City midfield department without England international Gareth Barry, who has a hip problem, while Nigel de Jong is stalling over a new deal.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract and has attracted interest from Bayern Munich.

Majestic Italy exceeds expectations - Review Again

Four years ago, Italy went out at this stage of the competition to Spain after a shootout and there were fears that Sunday would be déjà vu. Consider that disappointment avenged.
Italy made hard work of it Sunday night, but it is through to the semifinals of Euro 2012 — and deservedly so — after victory on penalties over England. Alessandro Diamanti showed great poise to strike home the decisive spot kick in Kiev and booked his team a place on a flight to Warsaw where it will face Germany on Thursday.
For a time, though, it really felt like it wouldn’t be Italy’s night and that it would be made to rue missed chances. One opportunity after another went begging; Daniele De Rossi sliced a long-range effort against the upright; Mario Balotelli skied an effort over the bar from five yards among other spurned attempts; Diamanti curled a shot past the post in extra time; Antonio Nocerino had a headed goal disallowed in extra time.
Football’s Gods appeared to be smiling on England and a repeat of Chelsea’s backs-to-the-wall path to improbable glory in the Champions League last month seemed to be the more likely outcome. Let it not be forgotten that Italy’s past record in penalties is hardly better than that of its opponents. While it won the World Cup from the spot in 2006, it’s also true it has prevailed in only two of its last seven.
Italy did not want it to go this way. “It would definitely be better for all of us to try to close out the match beforehand,” Buffon said earlier this week, “but if it goes to penalties so be it.”
Italy tried everything to win in normal time. From the second half onwards, its domination was near total. But Italy huffed and puffed and still couldn’t blow the house down, holding 68-percent possession of the ball. Italy completed 744 of 833 passes and no fewer than 36 shots were fired in England’s direction. Tellingly only eight were on target, which again brings us back to the difficulty Italy have had throughout Euro 2012 in converting the many openings it creates.


Even so, Andrea Pirlo was majestic Sunday night. At times, it felt as though he was not wearing a football uniform at all but rather a tuxedo and waving a baton, as he conducted an orchestra from midfield. It was one of the performances of the competition so far. Pirlos’s icing on the cake was his exquisite Antonin Panenka-inspired chipped penalty.

Stepping up to take his after Riccardo Montolivo had missed and Wayne Rooney’s shot to make it 2-1 to England’s favor, Pirlo’s spot kick drew Italy level. But, perhaps, more significantly, the coolness of it seemed to restore a sense of calm to his teammates and unsettle their opponents. One can only imagine what was running through the head of the next taker, Ashley Young, on seeing the unflappable Pirlo dink the ball teasingly into the middle of the net. Is it any wonder in this game of psychological brinkmanship that Young then folded and hit the bar?
Reflecting on Italy’s display, manager Cesare Prandelli can again feel vindicated. His decision to repudiate the country’s tradition of playing defensive, counter-attacking football and instead implement a more positive, attacking approach that seeks to entertain the public is worthy of commendation. Many neutrals have been won over by Italy and spoken of how they enjoyed watching them, for instance, against Spain.
Prandelli has presented a different Italy to the world, one that better represents and chimes with a country’s wide creative heritage, appreciable in its contributions to art, fashion and manufacturing. From that perspective, their Euro 2012 campaign already deserves to be considered a relative success.

After all, Italy started out in this competition amid low expectations; its preparations were overshadowed by scandal; their squad depleted by injury; and accordingly many of the best laid plans Prandelli had settled upon through qualifying went awry and needed a last minute review. At the time, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote: “If you’re going to Poland don’t book beyond June 18, the last day of the group stages.” Well, to their immense credit, they’ve lasted well beyond that point.
Now a semifinal with Germany awaits Italy. While the consensus among many of those watching is that they’ll be the underdogs, it’s worth recalling that their past encounters are better remembered in Rome, Naples, Turin and Milan than in Berlin, Munich, Dortmund and Hamburg. The reason for that is simple: Italy have never once lost to Germany in a major tournament. As far as they’re concerned, there are nothing but good memories to draw upon; a 3-1 triumph in the 1982 World Cup final — immortalized by Marco Tardelli’s ecstatic goal celebration — and, more recently, a 2-0 victory in extra time in the 2006 World Cup semifinal — sealed by Alessandro Del Piero on a thrilling breakaway.
Italy is Germany’s bogey team. The question is can they remain as such or will the hold be lifted?
