England Survives Ukraine Through Lampard's Late-Game Penalty

If not for Frank Lampard, who scored a penalty three minutes before the end of the match, England would have lost from playign against tough oponnent Ukraine.

Ukraine gained a well-deserved advantage during the first half when Yevgeni Konoplianka struck their only goal in the match. England visibly struggled from dealing with a strong Ukrainian side, with the ball possession rate being equal to both sides.

Yevgeni Kacheridi hand-balled Danny Welbeck, who came in as a substitute. The resulting yellow card for the Ukrainian paved way for Lampard's successful penalty, ending the match 1-1. Captain Steven Gerrard received a red card on the 88th minute, sending him off from his side's October San Marino match.

Manager Roy Hodgson looked relaxed with the Lampard goal, knowing that his side is a less-potent one than the one who faced Moldova's 5-0 thrashing. The side fell short of viable options after Theo Walcott and Daniel Sturridge fell ill with a virus that gave them stomach cramps. Players staying in the injury sidelines are Andy Carroll, Wayne Rooney and Ashley Cole.

While the England squad is lacking its key players, Ukraine proved to be a difficult group opponent. The first half saw the Ukrainians in impressive command of ball possession. Tom Cleverley's shots missed after gaining goal opportunities that could have given England earlier leads.

The toughness of Ukraine became more apparent when Roman Zozulya slammed into Gerrard, leaving the England captain in pain. Oleg Gusev nearly slotted a goal beyond Joe Hart but narrowly missed the woodwork.

Jermain Defoe successfully shot from 20 yards, initially giving what would have been England's first goal in the match. Referee Cuneyt Cakir came in and made the effort invalid, ruling that the midfielder committed an illegal hand-off right before the shot.

As Gerrard thwarted an Ukraine attempt from Ruslan Rotan, Tom Cleverley's notorious misses came in. First, his shot went directly to keeper Andriy Pyatov after taking off from a Defoe pass. Then, he wasted a clear opportunity by shooting wide from an ideal position, with the ball hitting the outpost.

Wycombe hit by transfer embargo

Wycombe Wanderers have been placed under a transfer embargo after failing to file their accounts on time.

adams-park-635842173.jpg (470×200)

The temporary embargo will not directly affect the club's attempts to avoid relegation from League One with the season's final loan window having already closed.

Wanderers are also playing down the issue, which relates to their accounts for the year ended June 30 2011. A statement on Wycombe's official website read: "The accounts were scheduled to be filed with Companies House and the Football League by Saturday March 31 but have been delayed due to the imminent sale of Adams Park tenants London Wasps. Because of the uncertainty surrounding Wasps, the club have been unable to finalise the budget for the forthcoming season.

"This means the club has been placed under a temporary transfer embargo but this should have no effect due to the transfer and loan window being closed. The embargo will be lifted once the accounts have been filed and the audit has been completed. The club would like to reassure supporters that the matter will be resolved in the coming weeks."

Wycombe Wanderers Trust, meanwhile, have announced that David Roberton and Don Woodward have both resigned their positions as supporters trust directors on Wycombe's board as a result of the club's failure to lodge its accounts.

Southend United Vs Cheltenham Town football match preview

Southend United's poor home run has seen them win just 1 and draw 2 of the last six. While Shrimpers have scored 4, a worringly large 9 have been leaked at the other end. Southend United are just outside the promotion places, in 5th, having taken 67 points from 39 games.

Cheltenham Town's away form is none too clever either, accumulating just 1 victory and 1 draw from their last six played. The Robins's have scored 9 goals in these games, but conceded an alarming 11. Cheltenham Town's total of 65 points from their 39 games sees them sitting in the playoff places in npower League Two.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Bolton Wanderers match preview

Aaron Lennon is likely to be missing for Spurs, meaning that Harry Redknapp will again have to find a solution to cure a lopsided midfield that has affected the north Londoners' performances in recent weeks. Spurs are also without long-term absentees Michael Dawson, Tom Huddlestone and Heurelho Gomes. Carlo Cudicini, Ryan Nelsen and Danny Rose are likely to deputise for the side's cup squad.

Ricardo Gardner, Lee Chung-Yong and Stuart Holden have been missing for the Trotters for much of the season and they have been joined by Fabrice Muamba as the midfielder continues to recover in intensive care after suffering a cardiac arrest in the tie's initial game. Top scorer Ivan Klasnic may return to the side after starting the weekend's win over Blackburn on the bench and Arsenal loanee Ryo Miyaichi is likely to continue on the left wing after a string of excellent performances since his temporary switch to the Reebok Stadium.

Liverpool vs Stoke City football liga match preview

Liverpool have only managed to claim victory in four out of their last 12 fixtures, drawing four and losing the same amount. The Reds are looking to claim a domestic double for the first time since 2001, when they beat Birmingham City on penalties to lift the League Cup, then defeated Arsenal in the dramatic closing minutes of the FA Cup final thanks to two goals from Michael Owen. This will be the first time the two sides have met in the FA Cup since 1988, when a Peter Beardsley strike helped Liverpool win a replay.

The Anfield encounter will be Stoke City’s 46th game of this season, having started the campaign in July against Hajduk Split in the Europa League. While Liverpool have played all of their FA Cup games at home, Stoke have had to play each of Gillingham, Derby and Crawley away from the Britannia Stadium. The Potters have only conceded more than one goal once in their last 15 FA Cup ties, spanning three seasons.

Crystal Palace Vs Hull City football liga match preview

Wilfried Zaha is suspended for Crystal Palace's clash with Hull. The teenage winger starts a three-game ban after he was sent off during the 1-1 draw at Burnley last weekend. Midfielder Kagisho Dikgacoi could miss out again with a hamstring injury but winger Sean Scannell should be fit after a tight calf.

Hull winger Robbie Brady hopes to shake off a recurring thigh problem in time to feature. Brady missed the midweek win at Cardiff that propelled the Tigers back into the top six, but could return to contention. The Tigers, in sixth place with a game in hand on most of their rivals, are unbeaten in their last 10 league matches.

Brighton and Hove Albion Vs Cardiff City match preview

Of the 28 games played, Seagulls have recorded 14 wins, and Cardiff City have come away with 7 victories. The last time the two teams met at Brighton & Hove Albion was back in October 2005, over five years ago, with Cardiff City inflicting a narrow 1-2 defeat upon the Seagulls in a Championship match.

Brighton & Hove Albion are in decent form at home, having won four and drawn two of their last six games, The Seagulls have scored 10 and conceded 3 during this period. In complete contrast to Brighton & Hove Albion, Cardiff City are having a torrid time on their travels, managing a paltry 2 draws from the last six matches. While the Bluebirds have hit 4 goals, 11 have hit the back of the wrong net. Brighton & Hove Albion lie just outside the playoff positions in the npower Championship, picking up 54 points from their 34 games so far.

Bristol City vs Leicester City match preview

Bristol City's injury woes have worsened ahead of the visit of Leicester in the npower Championship on Tuesday, with the news Albert Adomah will play no part. Winger Adomah hobbled off late in the first half of the 3-0 defeat at Ipswich on Saturday with strained ligaments. Adomah joins an injury list which also includes Marvin Elliott, who has been ruled out for the season after snapping his Achilles tendon, and broken ankle victim David Clarkson.

Leading scorer David Nugent is a doubt for Leicester. Nugent injured a knee in netting his 14th goal of the season to give the Foxes the lead in the 2-0 home victory over Coventry at the weekend. The striker will be assessed but he does not want to miss Tuesday night's match.Defender Paul Konchesky will definitely miss out following his red card against Coventry. The full-back will begin a three-match suspension. Forward Paul Gallacher could be involved, particularly if Nugent is absent, after missing the last three games with a hamstring injury.

Southend United Vs Crawley Town match preview

Paul Sturrock must decide whether to recall Liam Dickinson, Kane Ferdinand, Ryan Hall or Bilel Mohsni for Southend's crunch clash. Dickinson, Ferdinand and Hall were punished for breaching club discipline procedures in the team hotel the night before last weekend's defeat at Morecambe, while the conduct of winger Mohsni was also once again in the spotlight following his behaviour at the Globe Arena.

Meanwhile, Kyle McFadzean is doubtful for Crawley's trip. The defender limped out of Saturday's 1-0 home defeat by Torquay with a knee injury. Warren Cummings replaced McFadzean for his debut after joining on loan from Bournemouth on Friday, but Claude Davis could step in at Roots Hall after missing out against the Gulls following a long trip home from international duty with Jamaica.

Cardiff City and West Ham United match for English League Chanpionship

West Ham United face a test of their promotion credentials on Sunday when they travel to Cardiff City in the Championship. The Hammers visit Malky Mackay's side who are playing their first match since losing on penalties to Liverpool in the Carling Cup final. The Hammers will be looking to come away from Wales with a result and a 1-1 draw would be seen as a decent point in their quest for automatic promotion.

Cardiff won at West Ham on the opening day of the season after a last minute goal from Kenny Miller. City are currently sixth in the table but have lost three of their last four league games. Despite the exertions of last weekend's valiant Carling Cup defeat to Liverpool on penalties, Mackay has insisted none of his players have picked up any new injuries as they take on the second-placed Hammers at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Blackpool against Hull City this Saturday

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway will have one striker back at his disposal to face Hull as he tries to bring in another. Fowler will not be available to face the Tigers as he was not registered before Thursday's noon cut-off point, but Holloway can once again call upon Roman Bednar after the on-loan West Brom frontman recovered from the dead-leg that stopped him featuring in Saturday's 3-1 win at Bristol City.

Hull expect all four of their midweek internationals, Cameron Stewart, Corry Evans, Peter Gulacsi and Tom Cairney, to be in contention for the clash.Hull, unbeaten in their last six league games, will embark on a run of nine matches in 29 days at Blackpool following the postponement of last month's scheduled games against Cardiff and Portsmouth.
