Ukraine gained a well-deserved advantage during the first half when Yevgeni Konoplianka struck their only goal in the match. England visibly struggled from dealing with a strong Ukrainian side, with the ball possession rate being equal to both sides.
Yevgeni Kacheridi hand-balled Danny Welbeck, who came in as a substitute. The resulting yellow card for the Ukrainian paved way for Lampard's successful penalty, ending the match 1-1. As Gerrard thwarted an Ukraine attempt from Ruslan Rotan, Tom Cleverley's notorious misses came in. First, his shot went directly to keeper Andriy Pyatov after taking off from a Defoe pass. Then, he wasted a clear opportunity by shooting wide from an ideal position, with the ball hitting the outpost.
