Arsenal, Manchester United Earn Victory in League Matches

Premier League top four favourites Arsenal and Manchester United have gained positive football predictions following their impressive victories last Sunday.

A combative Arsenal side trounced Liverpool with a clean sheet 2-0. The Gunners took advantage of The Reds’ poor form and unleashed firepower through new signings Santi Cazorla and Lukas Podolski.

Podolski’s 31st-minute shot went through the Liverpool post. Cazorla benefited from Steve Gerrard’s passing error to Luis Suarez and assisted the German international for his first goal in the league.

Rising star Raheem Sterling continued to operate Liverpool’s midfield in an impressive fashion, but he failed to shine due to failed efforts of his experienced colleagues. Diaby remarkably starred in Arsenal’s midfield and provided numerous goal chances, including an assist to Olivier Giroud whose attempt narrowly missed the enemy woodwork.

Cazorla sealed Arsenal’s victory with a 69th-minute shot assisted by Podolski. Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina’s mistake in letting the ball through revealed his decline. He committed the same error during his club’s match against Hearts of Midlothian in the Europa League play-off.

Manchester United showed early-game struggles while playign against toughoponnent Southampton, but won through late goals resulting to a Robin van Persie hat trick 3-2. The Saints fought hard by scoring the first goal through a Rickie Lambert header.

Van Persie’s response came in the form of an equalizing volley kick. He missed on a potential scoring attempt when Southampton’s watchful keeper, Kelvin Davis, saved his penalty. Morgan Schneiderlin headed through United’s woodwork to post a 55th-minute lead for the Saints.

United appeared headed for another loss as they failed to score in the middle of the second half. Hope came in when van Persie shot for a second goal in the 87th minute. The Dutchman and former Arsenal captain scored an extra-time thriller that gave manager Sir Alex Ferguson a fitting victory in his 1000th match with the club.

Van Persie's late show earns United win at Saints

Photo: AP

LONDON (AP) — Robin van Persie made up for an embarrassing failure from the penalty spot by grabbing a hat trick with two late goals in the play of the two tough opponents  Manchester United's dramatic 3-2 win at Southampton on Sunday, earning the English giants a second straight win in the Premier League.
In a fitting way to mark United manager Alex Ferguson's 1,000th league game in charge, Van Persie equalized in the 87th minute before heading home a corner in the second minute of injury time for his fourth goal since joining from Arsenal for 24 million pounds ($38 million) in the offseason.
Arsenal showed earlier there is life after Van Persie when new signings Lukas Podolski and Santi Cazorla scored their first goals for the club in a 2-0 win over struggling Liverpool. The loss leaves Liverpool rooted in the bottom three after the club's worst start to a season in 50 years, compounding its woes after a failure to add some much-needed signings to the squad on Friday's transfer deadline day.
In the day's other match, Aston Villa earned its first point of the campaign with a 1-1 draw at Aston Villa, only being denied victory because of Hatem Ben Arfa's stunning second-half equalizer. Van Persie's late show, which took him to 100 Premier League goals in 197 games, will have come as a mighty relief for the Netherlands striker, after his impudent chipped penalty was clawed away by goalkeeper Kelvin Davis in the 68th minute.
The score was 2-1 to Southampton at the time and United looked headed for a second loss in three games before Van Persie's last-gasp intervention. "I don't know what I was thinking with the penalty. I was going to hit it hard but at the last second I changed my mind," Van Persie said. "I'm quite disappointed about it. I ask certain standards from my game and at 2-1 down you cannot take a penalty like that."
Ferguson, famous for what the British media calls the "hairdryer treatment" in the dressing room when his team or player underperforms, was all smiles after the match despite Van Persie's error of judgment.
"I was surprised because every time I've seen him take a penalty he usually rattles it into the corners, so I was confident," Ferguson said. "But he made up for it." Having started the season with a 1-0 loss at Everton, this win lifted United up to fifth place on six points, one behind neighbor and reigning champion Manchester City and three behind early leader Chelsea.
Arsenal is in eighth place, a point further back than United. United's defense looked shaky throughout at St. Mary's Stadium, with both of promoted Southampton's goals stemming from crosses to the back post where United's full backs were outwitted.
Rickie Lambert put the hosts in front in the 16th, beating Rafael da Silva in the air and heading home a trademark finish. Van Persie equalized when he chested down a cross from Antonio Valencia and volleyed into the corner. But Southampton regained the lead in the 56th through Morgan Schneiderlin, beating a slipping Patrice Evra to a cross and planting a header into the corner.
"We have to take positives from our performance," said Southampton manager Nigel Adkins, whose side is the only one in the Premier League without a point. "We are scoring goals and what we have to do is stop conceding them at the other end."
The game changed when Ferguson sent on Paul Scholes in the 61st, with Southampton suddenly backing off and allowing the veteran midfielder to control play. The Liverpool-Arsenal match was already being seen as a must-win game for both teams, and it was the visitors who sealed their first win and goals of the season with an encouraging display at Anfield.
Podolski, the Germany forward, and Cazorla, the Spain midfielder, set each other up for their goals, while fit-again midfielder Abou Diaby was the standout player on the pitch and Arsenal also kept a third straight clean sheet.
"The sharpness gets better from game to game and we looked solid and scored two good goals," Arsenal manager Wenger said. "''Everybody understood quickly Cazorla would not need six months to settle. Lukas Podolski is deadly when he gets a chance. I am pleased for them."
Liverpool lacked a cutting edge up front, and failing to sign a striker this week after loaning out Andy Carroll to West Ham could come back to haunt manager Brendan Rodgers. "I am not here to cry," Rodgers said. "I felt we needed reinforcements — that is the reality. But it is gone now. The window is shut."
Ciaran Clark put Villa ahead at St. James' Park before Ben Arfa equalized with a rising drive from 20 yards (meters), rescuing Newcastle after a poor home performance.

Everton vs Leyton Orient: Match Preview

Everton vs Leyton Orient: Match Preview
After two solid wins in the Premiership, Everton are flying high and will be looking to get their Cup campaigns off on the right foot at Goodison Park on Wednesday. League One side Leyton Orient are the visitors and the occasion is the second round of the Capital One Cup (aka the League Cup).

Keys To The Game -

As Everton have found out to their detriment in previous years, underestimating lower-League opposition can be dangerous. While I do expect Moyes to retain his steely stare on the sidelines, he will give a few starters a break while maintaining some skill on the bench if it all starts going wrong. Orient have shown weakness against teams that play fluid, passing football and Everton have been doing that well this season. Expect a raucous welcome for the boys and intense pressure on Orient for the first few minutes as Everton will push for an early goal or two.

Leyton Orient, with all due respect, are not much of a match for the Toffees on current form and will count themselves extremely fortunate if they can get away with a narrow loss. With their ultra-defensive 4-1-4-1 formation, you can expect them to hoof the ball upfield and attempt to beat Everton in the air via setpieces. Dean Cox and Lee Cook are charged with distributing the ball in midfield for striker Kevin Lisbie, last season's top scorer.

Match Facts -

Everton have never won the League Cup, with two second-place finishes in 1977 and 1984.

The two sides last met in the League Cup in 1989, with Everton prevailing 4-2 in a two-legged second round game.

Leyton Orient are an East London club, formed in 1881 and have endured numerous name changes before the current version.

Their highest finish in a cup was in the 1977-1978 FA Cup when they reached the semifinals.

Orient played in the First Division in 1961/62, though they got relegated immediately after.

Noted composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and his brother Julian Lloyd Webber are two famous fans of Orient.

The O's were once sold for £5 after chairman Tony Wood lost his business due to the civil war in Rwanda in 1995.

Manchester United bid for Van Persie stalls

Sir Alex Ferguson says Manchester United’s attempts to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal have stalled.

The Netherlands striker, 29, has 11 months left on his Arsenal contract and has declined an offer to extend his deal at Emirates Stadium.

“We’ve made a bid, they [Arsenal] have been trying to negotiate with other clubs,” said United manager Ferguson.

“I don’t have a gut feeling about it. We can’t get a breakthrough with Arsenal.”

Ferguson

first revealed the Red Devils had made an offer for the Gunners forward on 20 July.

It is not known whether they have improved their original offer, but Ferguson said he did not know whether United’s pursuit of Van Persie would be successful.

It is understood Arsenal are reluctant to enter formal negotiations until a bid exceeds £20m.

“I don’t know what Arsenal’s thoughts are because they’re not giving anything away,” he told reporters after United’s friendly against Barcelona in Gothenburg on Wednesday, which finished in a 0-0 draw before Barca won 2-0 on penalties.

“It’s difficult to say why they’re operating this way. I can’t give you any more information. We just have to persevere.

“We are trying our best and hopefully it will come our way but there’s no progress at this moment in time.”

Van Persie scored 41 goals in 53 games for club and country last season and was named Professional Footballers’ Association and Football Writers’ player of the year.

Juventus have also been pursuing Van Persie’s services while Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini revealed the Premier League champions were now

out of the running

for the striker.

Meanwhile, Ferguson admitted to being staggered after hearing that another summer transfer target,

Lucas Moura,

had agreed to join French side Paris St-Germain.

The Brazilian, who has represented his country at the London Olympics, will join in January 2013 on a four-and-a-half-year deal from Sao Paulo.

“To tell everyone that PSG are here they’ve signed Thiago Silva and Zlatan Ibrahimovic,” added Ferguson. “They must have spent about £150m in the last month.

“When somebody’s paying 45 million euros (£35.5m) for a 19-year-old boy you have to say the game’s gone mad. I find it quite amazing.”

Joe Allen nationality error, Organisers Forced to reprint programmes

London 2012 organisers have been forced to print new official programmes for future Great Britain football matches after listing Welshman Joe Allen as English.

Organisers have apologised for the error in the listing of the 22-year-old Swansea and Wales midfielder.

A London 2012 spokeswoman said: "There was an error in our programme and we inadvertently listed Joe Allen as English. We apologise for this mistake and new programmes are now being printed with the correction in time for Team GB's next match."

The British Olympic Association were responsible for a similar blunder last night with an email reporting Great Britain women's victory over New Zealand being titled "England women on their way".

Sayers to compete despite injury

British javelin star Goldie Sayers will compete at London 2012 despite suffering a torn ligament in her elbow.
She broke her own British record with her first attempt at the

London Grand Prix
just over a week ago but suffered the injury on her fourth throw.
A scan two days later revealed the full extent of the damage.
At a training camp in Portugal the 30-year-old said the injury had “responded very well to treatment” and she had resumed training.
Sayers is speaking to former British javelin thrower Steve Backley about how to cope with the injury while competing.

61813511 goldie sayers bbc Sayers to compete despite injury
Backley won two Olympic silver medals and one bronze despite suffering from chronic knee problems.
she was forced out of action with a hip injury in July 2010 before damaging her knee nine months later.
She will be unable to have any pain-killing injections to help her compete as there are too many nerves in the surrounding area and there would be a risk of her losing feeling in her hand, making her unable to grip the javelin.
Sayers, who competed at both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics, is currently experimenting with a range of strappings to help ease the pain.

Great Britain 1-0 New Zealand

The Great Britain women’s football team kicked off the 2012 Olympics with a hard-fought victory over New Zealand at a sun-soaked Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Hope Powell’s GB team were making their

first appearance in the women’s Olympic football tournament
and for a while it looked as though it might turn into a frustrating afternoon for her side after they wasted a host of good chances.

Analysis

“We wanted a good, confident performance and we got the win. Great Britain have a great bench and there are impact players who can do a job. It is a tough job for Hope Powell but a nice one to have. For Steph Houghton to have the confidence to strike the ball like that was great. It had whip and pace and the goalkeeper had no chance. It was a fantastic strike. She had the belief that she was going to score.”

But the first action of the Games was settled when full-back Steph Houghton converted a free-kick midway through the second half, much to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd of 24,549 in the Welsh capital.

Powell’s team celebrated with a group huddle at the final whistle and a lap of the stadium – and they can look forward to the remainder of their Group E campaign, which continues against Cameroon on Saturday.

But it was a very different story during the opening exchanges as they were outplayed by the Football Ferns.

New Zealand,

who lost to England in the group stage of last year’s World Cup,
controlled the early battle in midfield and created a series of half-chances.

It was a worrying 15 minutes for Powell’s team but once they settled down they soon started to carve open their opponents.

The barrage of chances started when Arsenal full-back Houghton forced a save from unconvincing Kiwi keeper Jenny Bindon.

Eniola Aluko had a shot blocked, while the profligate Anita Asante struck the post with a header – a let-off that prompted Bindon to kiss the post – and failed to convert two more excellent headed opportunities.

Alex Scott shot wide after collecting a through ball from the intelligent Kelly Smith and, as the opening half turned into a story of missed opportunities, Kim Little unwisely opted to pass when the Football Ferns keeper had dived early, leaving a gaping hole at her near post.

History threatened to repeat itself after the restart, with New Zealand starting aggressively and going close through an Amber Hearn free-kick.

GB then reasserted their dominance on the contest, with Ali Riley making desperate blocks to deny Scott and half-time substitute Ellen White.

But in stark contrast with the opening half, Powell’s side eventually finished one of their numerous opportunities when Houghton’s free-kick nestled into the bottom corner.

The crowd responded with chants of “Team GB”, but they were almost silenced when a mix-up between Ifeoma Dieke and Scott presented Sarah Gregorious with a clean run at goal.

It was a glorious opening for the 24-year-old but her tame effort was saved by Karen Bardsley.

There was one further scare for Great Britain as Hearn went close with a curling strike from the edge of the area but Bardsley tipped it over the crossbar.

Everton accept €2.5m offer from Fenerbahçe for Joseph Yobo

Fenerbahçe have completed the transfer of Everton centre-back Joseph Yobo.

Everton have accepted the Istanbul club's €2.5 million offer following a lengthy negotiation process which dragged on over several weeks.

The Istanbul club had been unwilling to meet Everton's €3-4 million valuation of the Nigerian international and were at a deadlock with The Toffees.

Everton are reported to have agreed to lower price to bankroll a move for transfer target Steven Pienaar.

Toffees manager David Moyes has deemed Yobo surplus to requirements at Goodison Park and has been keen to offload the experienced defender.

The Nigerian International has been on loan with the Istanbul giants for the past two seasons and cemented himself as a first team regular.

Yobo has settled into life in Turkey and recently told reporters in Istanbul, "I am very happy in Turkey and at Fenerbahçe as is my family.

"I feel at home here, hopefully an agreement will be reached and I can continue playing at the club," he said.

The 31-year-old centre-back featured in 42 games last season and played an integral role in the Canaries finishing runners-up despite their turbulent year.

Yobo is expected to join Fenerbahçe in Austria for pre-season training.

Majestic Italy exceeds expectations - Review Again

Four years ago, Italy went out at this stage of the competition to Spain after a shootout and there were fears that Sunday would be déjà vu. Consider that disappointment avenged.
Italy made hard work of it Sunday night, but it is through to the semifinals of Euro 2012 — and deservedly so — after victory on penalties over England. Alessandro Diamanti showed great poise to strike home the decisive spot kick in Kiev and booked his team a place on a flight to Warsaw where it will face Germany on Thursday.
For a time, though, it really felt like it wouldn’t be Italy’s night and that it would be made to rue missed chances. One opportunity after another went begging; Daniele De Rossi sliced a long-range effort against the upright; Mario Balotelli skied an effort over the bar from five yards among other spurned attempts; Diamanti curled a shot past the post in extra time; Antonio Nocerino had a headed goal disallowed in extra time.
Football’s Gods appeared to be smiling on England and a repeat of Chelsea’s backs-to-the-wall path to improbable glory in the Champions League last month seemed to be the more likely outcome. Let it not be forgotten that Italy’s past record in penalties is hardly better than that of its opponents. While it won the World Cup from the spot in 2006, it’s also true it has prevailed in only two of its last seven.
Italy did not want it to go this way. “It would definitely be better for all of us to try to close out the match beforehand,” Buffon said earlier this week, “but if it goes to penalties so be it.”
Italy tried everything to win in normal time. From the second half onwards, its domination was near total. But Italy huffed and puffed and still couldn’t blow the house down, holding 68-percent possession of the ball. Italy completed 744 of 833 passes and no fewer than 36 shots were fired in England’s direction. Tellingly only eight were on target, which again brings us back to the difficulty Italy have had throughout Euro 2012 in converting the many openings it creates.

Even so, Andrea Pirlo was majestic Sunday night. At times, it felt as though he was not wearing a football uniform at all but rather a tuxedo and waving a baton, as he conducted an orchestra from midfield. It was one of the performances of the competition so far. Pirlos’s icing on the cake was his exquisite Antonin Panenka-inspired chipped penalty.

Stepping up to take his after Riccardo Montolivo had missed and Wayne Rooney’s shot to make it 2-1 to England’s favor, Pirlo’s spot kick drew Italy level. But, perhaps, more significantly, the coolness of it seemed to restore a sense of calm to his teammates and unsettle their opponents. One can only imagine what was running through the head of the next taker, Ashley Young, on seeing the unflappable Pirlo dink the ball teasingly into the middle of the net. Is it any wonder in this game of psychological brinkmanship that Young then folded and hit the bar?
Reflecting on Italy’s display, manager Cesare Prandelli can again feel vindicated. His decision to repudiate the country’s tradition of playing defensive, counter-attacking football and instead implement a more positive, attacking approach that seeks to entertain the public is worthy of commendation. Many neutrals have been won over by Italy and spoken of how they enjoyed watching them, for instance, against Spain.
Prandelli has presented a different Italy to the world, one that better represents and chimes with a country’s wide creative heritage, appreciable in its contributions to art, fashion and manufacturing. From that perspective, their Euro 2012 campaign already deserves to be considered a relative success.

After all, Italy started out in this competition amid low expectations; its preparations were overshadowed by scandal; their squad depleted by injury; and accordingly many of the best laid plans Prandelli had settled upon through qualifying went awry and needed a last minute review. At the time, La Gazzetta dello Sport wrote: “If you’re going to Poland don’t book beyond June 18, the last day of the group stages.” Well, to their immense credit, they’ve lasted well beyond that point.
Now a semifinal with Germany awaits Italy. While the consensus among many of those watching is that they’ll be the underdogs, it’s worth recalling that their past encounters are better remembered in Rome, Naples, Turin and Milan than in Berlin, Munich, Dortmund and Hamburg. The reason for that is simple: Italy have never once lost to Germany in a major tournament. As far as they’re concerned, there are nothing but good memories to draw upon; a 3-1 triumph in the 1982 World Cup final — immortalized by Marco Tardelli’s ecstatic goal celebration — and, more recently, a 2-0 victory in extra time in the 2006 World Cup semifinal — sealed by Alessandro Del Piero on a thrilling breakaway.
Italy is Germany’s bogey team. The question is can they remain as such or will the hold be lifted?

Soccer-European season kicks off after 48-hour break

(Reuters) - The new European season kicked off with three embarrassingly one-sided matches and two goalless draws on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after Spain won Euro 2012.

Malta captain Michael Mifsud produced the outstanding performance of the evening with four goals as Valletta crushed hapless Lusitans of Andorra 8-0 in one of three Champions League first qualifying round first-leg ties.

Lusitans, who won the Andorran league for the first time last season, were quickly in trouble as Jonathan Caruana gave Valletta a fourth minute lead.

Former Kaiserslautern, Lillestrom, Coventry City and Barnsley forward Mifsud and Brazilian striker Jhonnattann, signed from Volta Redonda earlier this year, added two goals apiece as the hosts raced to a 5-0 lead after only 23 minutes.

Mifsud made it 6-0 and completed his hat-trick on the stroke of halftime and added another to his tally with a solo goal in the 70th minute before Edmond Agius rounded off the scoring two minutes later.

Luxemburg's FC Dudelange, who got the 2012-13 season rolling as their game kicked off first, thumped San Marino's Tre Penne 7-0 while Northern Ireland's Linfield were held to a goalless draw by B36 Torshavn from the Faroe Islands.

Dudelange's match kicked off only two days after Spain lifted the Euro 2012 trophy in Kiev to bring the curtain down on the previous season.

Sofian Benzouien and Aurelien Joachim both scored twice for the Luxemburg side who have been domestic champions 10 times in the last 13 seasons.

The Champions League will take nearly 10 months to complete, with four qualifying rounds, a group stage and three more rounds of of knockout games, before ending on May 25 with the final at Wembley.

There were also two games in the mind-bogglingly complex Europa League where Gomel won 6-0 at Vikingur in a meeting of the teams who finished third in Belarus and Faroe Islands respectively.
Portadown of Northern Ireland drew 0-0 at Macedonia's Shkendija in the other match, with 35 further ties to be played on Thursday.

Mario made a King Kong

Top Italian daily newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport has apologised for printing a cartoon portraying black Italy striker Mario Balotelli as King Kong.

Media reports said Balotelli’s agent Mino Raiola had reacted with fury at the depiction, which comes after the 21-year-old has battled racism in his homeland and abroad for years.

The cartoon of the Manchester City forward on top of London’s Big Ben swatting away footballs was meant to be humourous and positive, showing the striker as a giant who had conquered England.

However, in the wake of Italy’s Euro 2012 quarter-final win over England and ahead of their semi-final with Germany on Thursday, the cartoon has received complaints from readers. “We can honestly say it is not one of the best efforts by our great cartoonist,” Gazzetta said.

“If someone found it offensive we are sorry. “This newspaper has always fought against racism in stadiums and denounced monkey noises aimed at Balotelli.”

Neither Balotteli nor Italy were immediately available to comment.

The cartoon was printed on Sunday and at first went largely unnoticed but has now become a hot topic across the internet.

Balotelli, born in Italy and of Ghanaian descent, was racially abused by Juventus fans during his time with Inter Milan and the Turin club was forced by Serie A to play a match behind closed doors.

However, racism campaigners in Italy have long believed not enough was done to protect him in a country not as used to immigration as other major European nations like the Britain and France.

At Euro 2012 Balotelli was subjected to racist abuse by Croatia fans during a match on June 14 and the Croatian FA was fined 80,000 euros ($99,800) by European governing body UEFA.

The size of the fine was criticised by the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, who told Reuters there was public concern that Denmark’s Nicklas Bendtner was fined 20,000 euros more for exposing an illegal advert on his underpants.

Portugal's Victory a Step Away for Championship

Portugal was minutes away from suffering heartbreak at the hands of Denmark.

Substitute Silvestre Varela refused to let that happen. The F.C. Porto forward was able to rip a turn-around shot passed Stephan Andersen in the 87th minute to give Portugal the 3-2 win they so desperately needed.

Now the Portuguese have momentum heading into their final match of group play against the Netherlands, and that's all they will need. The Dutch are coming off a crippling 2-1 loss to Germany, and now find themselves firmly situated at the bottom of Group B.

Unfortunately for Portugal, they didn't get much help from Cristiano Ronaldo, yet again. That's not as bleak of a statement as it may seem.

In the first game of group play against Germany, Ronaldo was largely uninvolved. His teammates hardly looked for him on the wing. Even when they did, they sent him futile passes that he had no chance to capitalize on.

But in the match against Denmark, Ronaldo was actually a part of the game. While he did fail to take advantage of a few golden opportunities—most notably a free kick from just outside the box that he sent sailing over the net—his presence was at least felt.

It's strange to say this about one of the best football players in the world, but baby steps are good too.

Ronaldo should be able to put it together against the sub-par defense of the Dutch. Relatively sub-par, of course, compared to the back lines of Germany and Denmark.

At least Paulo Bento knows that he can get great production out of the other players on his team.

Pepe was brilliant for the second consecutive match. He found the back of the net with a brilliant header off a corner kick, tucking the ball inside the near post while his momentum carried him in the opposite direction.

Ronaldo is supposed to be the heart and soul of this team, but it's the lesser players who have been getting the job done. Along with Pepe, Nani was brilliant today as well. He fired the low cross that put Helder Postiga in perfect position to send the ball into the upper-right corner of the net.

Joao Moutinho was on his game today as well. He executed the perfect corner kick that bent just enough into Pepe that it allowed him to slide the ball passed Stephan Andersen.

Now that the role players have stepped up and assumed control of the team, if Ronaldo can give Portugal anything at all, they will have no problem beating a demoralized Netherlands team in their final match of group play.

If Portugal can beat the Netherlands and Germany wins against the Danes like it should, the Portuguese will be headed to the knockout stage of the 2012 European Championships.

With the way the Portuguese offense played against Denmark, don't be surprised if things go their way.

Denmark meets up Portugal in 2012 European Championship

June 13, 2012 – for the fifth time after four years Denmark and Portugal will meet again I a competitive fight on Wednesday. This two teams have been drawn together and both qualify the 2010 world Cup and Euro 2012. Portugal was known for their qualifying through playoff while Denmark directly qualified for the finals from gaining more points.

This is the first of those five games that will be played at a neutral site, and based on the results of the last four games, this should add some serious unpredictability to the match. In World Cup qualifying, Denmark shockingly upset Portugal on the road, then drew them at home. In both of their Euro 2012 qualifying matches, the home side won.

Portugal played seventy odd minutes of defensive football against Germany, they set out their stall to be defensive and relied on Ronaldo creating something on his own up front but the one positive from the loss to Germany was once they went behind Portugal opened up and played football creating three guilt edged chances that should have been converted and should what they can do going forward. Hopefully the Portugese will be let off the leash from the start here against a dogged Denmark. In two games in qualifying for the tournament Portugal beat Denmark 4-1 at home but lost 2-1 away. This is an intriguing game and with the likes of Nani, Cristiano Ronaldo, Meireles, Pepe and Contreau there is plenty of talent here in this Portugal side and they know they must win.

Denmark pulled off the shock of the first round beating the Netherlands 1-0. While the Oranje dominated the game and created a heap of chances Denmark did defend well. Daniel agger the Danish captain is the rock at the back and will be the key player for Denmark in the marshalling of Cristiano Ronaldo who will play through the center. With Bendtner and Eriksen through the center this is a solid side built on hard work. Coach Olsen will look for more of the same agaisnt Portugal, play on the counter attack and hold a high solid defensive line. Ericksen wasnt great for me in the first game in the group but he is still young and it was hard for an attacking player as Denmark were defending for so long.
