English Premier League News: PFA Announces New Action Plan against Racism

Be on the lookout for more updates on the English Premier League and bet at 12BET.com now!

THE LATEST ENGLISH PREMIER LEAGUE NEWS – The Professional Footballers’ Association recently released a six-point plan of action that aims to act against racism in football.

In light of the recent incidents on FA’s punishment of John Terry on racism against QPR defender Anton Ferdinand and Rio Ferdinand’s refusal to wear an anti-racism campaign shirt from Kick It Out, alongside other players, the PFA made the action plan that will push for tougher penalties on racism.

The new plan of action plans to make racism a “sackable offence” in place of fines and bans and enforce the “Rooney rule” – in which more black managers will be appointed. This is to counter the impending formation of the Black Players Association, consisting black players aiming to protect those who have played past through rival sides that have experienced racist abuse.

UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2012-13 Barcelona vs. Celtic

Match Date: October 24, 2012 (Wednesday)
Match Time: 2:45 am (+08:00 GMT)
Venue: Camp Nou (HOME: Barcelona)

BET FOR BARCELONA @ 1.740!

Barcelona will host Scottish champions Celtic in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League match. Barcelona is first in the Group G table with six points from two wins. Celtic comes in at second with one win and one draw forming four points.

Barcelona have played past through rival Scottish side Celtic without losing in their past four Champions League matches.  For the Catalan side, the Scots are relatively familiar foes, although changes in the past few years would definitely make their upcoming fixture quite unpredictable.

Argentine talisman Lionel Messi will be the undisputed front man for Barcelona. His 21st hat trick for Barça against Deportivo La Coruna during their previous La Liga match is no understatement to his massive attacking capabilities that earned him three Ballon d’Or awards and the label “best football player in the world”. While there is no question with the Catalans’ attacking forte, defensive problems might prove to be a counterbalance. Captain Carles Puyol, Gerard Pique and Dani Alves will not figure in the match due to injuries, effectively softening the club’s reputed hard-rock defence. Alex Song, Javier Mascherano and Adriano could come off as back line replacements, although all three players are relatively fragile.

Celtic will start with midfielders Kris Commons, Scott Brown and James Forrest. Georgios Samaras will play the starting striker role. Defence options remain unclear for the Scottish side, as injured defenders Kevin Wilson and Adam Matthews are under observation for potential fitness to play at Camp Nou.

Betting For World Cup Qualifiers | England Manager Roy Hodgson Having A Hard Time Arranging Starting XI against Poland

THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS – Roy Hodgson, manager of England, admitted that he has to contemplate on choosing his starters when they face Poland tonight. He calls his dilemma a “welcome selection headache”, citing the great variety he has in his squad.

Hodgson is betting on most of his starters who played past through rival San Marino last Friday.  Saying that they did very well during that match, he is contemplating on keeping the same set in the line-up alongside using Steven Gerrard (returning from a one-match ban), Ashley Cole and Jermain Defoe (who were substitutes against San Marino).

With new players trying to break through as England seniors, Hodgson noted that they have to play well as there are seniors who are still keen on playing for the national team.

England held to 1-1 draw by Poland in qualifier

WARSAW, Poland (AP) — England stumbled for the second time in World Cup qualifying on Wednesday, with Poland holding the dreary visitors to a 1-1 draw in a match delayed by a day due to a waterlogged pitch.

Kamil Glik headed in Poland's equalizer in the 70th minute in Warsaw after goalkeeper Joe Hart floundered as he attempted to punch away a corner. "I didn't get there and the lad has done a good header," Hart said. "It's my fault, I probably should have punched it or stayed in goal. I didn't do either and it's probably cost us the three points."

Wayne Rooney put England in front in the 31st, when captain Steven Gerrard's corner bounced off his shoulder and was helped into the net by Lukasz Piszczek. But as England became increasingly sloppy, Rooney squandered a chance to extend the advantage before Glik's equalizer on a lackluster afternoon for the English in the Polish capital.

"I don't think Wayne was having one of his better days and he was also tiring," Hodgson said. England, which was also held to 1-1 by Ukraine at Wembley, has a one-point lead in Group H over Montenegro but has played an extra game. Roy Hodgson's side has won two and drawn two.

"We are disappointed not to take three points today," Gerrard said. "Our points tally could be a lot better ... we are not going to grumble." The team had been forced to wait another day to play after heavy rain on Tuesday — and the failure to close the stadium roof — left pools of water on the field at the 1.8 billion zloty ($600 million) National Stadium.

Hodgson didn't think the surface had fully recovered. "The pitch was quite difficult, it was a soggy pitch, the ball wasn't moving well," Hodgson said. England was guilty of needlessly giving the ball away too often when in possession and lacking in creativity, leaving Jermain Defoe isolated up front.

Poland exploited space down England's right flank and Hart had to be alert early on to clear the ball away from the feet of Piszczek. A poor clearance from Hart straight to Kamil Grosicki also presented the Poles with an opening. Grosicki released Robert Lewandowski, who skipped past the challenge of Cleverley and into the penalty area before firing a cross-shot wide of the post.

But Rooney silenced the fans who managed to attend the delayed match. "We had a failed cover at one corner kick and that led to a mishap," Poland coach Waldemar Fornalik said. "But in the second half we forced the English into defense."

At the start of the second half Ludovic Obraniak was denied by Hart's only good save, while Piszczek's half volley went wide. But the equalizer finally came when Hart and Lescott were exposed by Glik.

"We toiled very hard," Glik said. "It was a very tough game, especially when we were losing 1-0 ... (but) our game was consistent, we had a good pace from the start and we kept it in the second half and we scored. England did not create clear scoring situations."

Betting For World Cup Qualifiers | Carl Jenkinson Wants To Play For England

THE LATEST SPORTS NEWS – Young Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson expressed his preference to play for England in the senior national team.

Jenkinson is currently playing for the Under-21 team of Finland – his mother’s birthplace. He was able to impress England manager Roy Hodgson, who was looking for new talent to boost his side. The defender is currently betting to play for the English squad once allowed to do so.

Hodgson has invited Jenkinson to play for England once he is done with his duty for Finland. He said that he did not need to convince the player further to join the English team, which has played past through rival San Marino successfully last Friday

Football Scoreboard Latest Match News: Wayne Rooney Interested to Become England’s Permanent Captain

FOOTBALL LATEST MATCH UP OCTOBER – Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has expressed his desire to take on the England captaincy someday after leading the team to an impressive 5-0 away win against San Marino.

Rooney has played past through rival teams with England for 77 times already. Manager Roy Hodgson named him vice-captain of the squad during EURO 2012.

Substituting Steven Gerrard as captain last Friday, Rooney considers permanent captaincy as “…a great honour and hopefully one day it can be full-time”.

Hodgson said that Rooney is “unbelievably serious” in playing for the national team. He admitted that he would have a hard time choosing between the United striker and Frank Lampard, another potential captain, when the Chelsea midfielder returns from injury.

Andy Walker: 'Owen Coyle deserved more time at Bolton Wanderers'

Former Bolton Wanderers star Andy Walker has pledged his support to ousted manager Owen Coyle.

The one time Burnden Park favourite believes that the Scot has the skills to do the job and was not given enough time by the club's executives.

"Owen was one of the good guys and given time he would have been able to turn things around," he told talkSPORT. "They've got a strong squad but results are everything."

Walker went on to say that Coyle's successor should be somebody with a proven track record of bringing teams up to the top flight of English football.

"Bolton didn't want to take the chance of losing out on the new [Premier League] TV deal that will kick in next season," he added.

"They need a lift and a spark from somewhere. Bolton need someone who has experience of winning in that division and of getting promotion from the Championship to the Premier League."

Mick McCarthy, Alex McLeish, Roy Keane and Sammy Lee are among the frontrunners for the Bolton hotseat following Coyle's exit.

Sports Bet News: Real Madrid Manager Jose Mourinho Ponders on Future Return to Premier League, Says He Wants to Face Man Utd’s Sir Alex Ferguson

THE LATEST SPORTS BET UPDATE – Jose Mourinho, the outspoken manager of La Liga champions Real Madrid, said that he would not wait for Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson to step down if he pushes through with returning to the Premier League.

Mourinho, who led Chelsea that played past through rival sides to win two league titles, did not hide his intention to make a comeback to the top English club league. Such has attracted attention from his former club and its rivals United and Manchester City.

United has included Mourinho in their shortlist of possible replacements for Ferguson. The 70-year old manager has managed the club for most of its Premier League history and led it to 12 league titles.

With old age now looking inevitable for Ferguson, speculations that he may leave United the following season are now widespread. Such will provide an opportunity for Mourinho to settle in at United, with his reputation as “The Special One” seen as an approach effective for maintaining the English club’s title-winning image.

Despite the apparent opportunity, Mourinho said that he opts to face Ferguson in the Premier League instead – a message that seem like a denial of a possible future stint with United. He noted that he regards the United manager highly and that he considers him an icon of the game.Calling Ferguson the “boss of the coaches”, Mourinho expressed his desire to meet again him as manager of United if he makes his move back to England. He downplayed an immediate transfer to Premier League, as he plans to complete his four-year contract he has with Real Madrid.

When asked about a possible move to Manchester City, Mourinho declined to give any comments. He assured that he is happy with managing Real Madrid, which he calls “the best club in the world”.

Sports Bet News: Man City’s Sergio Aguero Claims Referees Biased against Foreigners, Man Utd’s Sir Alex Ferguson Replies Foreigners Are Diving Offenders

THE LATEST SPORTS BET UPDATE – Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero expressed his impression that referees in the Premier League favour English players over foreign players, particularly in diving.

As City played past through rival side Fulham in their encounter last Saturday, the defending league champions contested penalty appeals for Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Tevez – both of which are turned down. On this account, Aguero said that foreign players get negative bias from referees.

Aguero continued by saying that English players enjoy “a little bit of privilege” with the referees. He believes that there is a possibility that referees harbour suspicion against foreigners and if that is true, it would “not [be] good for anyone”.

The Argentinian striker, City’s top scorer last year, noted that he does not want to get involved in any confrontation with referees. He remarked that in any game, referees may make wrong decisions, but that should not stop them from playing on.

Apart from Aguero’s statements, concerns about Liverpool striker Luis Suarez’ diving reputation resulting to unjust judgment from referees came to the fore. Captain Steven Gerrard acknowledged that it would be up for the referees if they choose to judge him positively or not.

In response to Aguero’s allegations that the referees are biased, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson replied to say that foreigners in the league are the ones who are prone to diving. He said that there are more foreign divers in the league’s history.

Ferguson’s remarks followed after his side lost while hosting Tottenham on Sunday. He remains firm in his assertion that they truly deserve a penalty kick following referee Chris Foy’s decision not to do so after the Spurs’ Jan Vertonghen appeared to have fouled Nani. The manager said that when it comes to penalties, “[S]ometimes you get them, sometimes you don't”.

Sports Bet News: Man Utd’s Champions League Trek to Unknown Cluj Will Be a Success, Says Wayne Rooney

THE LATEST SPORTS BET UPDATE – Striker Wayne Rooney said that Manchester United would not repeat their horrible Champions League last year as they continue their hunt to become a winning European club against relatively unknown CFR Cluj on Tuesday.

United played past through rival outfit Galatasaray 1-0 in their last Champions League group match this season. This time, the top English squad will travel to the city of Cluj-Napoca in Romania to face the champions of the Liga I.

Among those who will travel with Rooney are Robin van Persie, Shinji Kagawa, Rio Ferdinand and Anderson, among others. They will be without the presence of Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Both United and Cluj won their opening group stage berths in this season’s Champions League. The English side hopes to get past through the group stage to qualify for a much stronger showing than last year.

Rooney remarked that the Champions League is not a similar case with the Premier League, recognizing that there is stiffer competition between clubs vying to become the best in Europe. He added that they have to be in their best form to prevent crashing out of the competition like last season.

After spending time in the sidelines due to a large thigh wound sustained earlier in the league this season, Rooney came back to play as a substitute against Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday. His impressive assist to Nani’s goal reflected that he has finally regained his top form.

Excited for his return to the Champions League, Rooney acknowledges the challenges that they have to face ahead. Nevertheless, he considers the competition as one which he “love[s] playing in”.

Meanwhile, United welcomes the return of Jonny Evans after spending time in the sidelines for an injured ankle. There is no news yet as to whether the defender will be available to play, especially in light of Ferdinand’s backline inefficiency concerns as seen against the Spurs.

Napoli beats Sampdoria 1-0 to rejoin Juve in lead

ROME (AP) — Napoli rejoined Juventus at the top of Serie A with a 1-0 win at 10-man Sampdoria on Sunday, as the southern club seeks its first Italian title since Diego Maradona first led it to glory.
Photo: AP Napoli forward Edinson Roberto Gomez Cavani celebrates his side's 1-0 win at the end of a Serie A soccer match between Sampdoria and Napoli, in Genoa, Italy, Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012.

Edinson Cavani converted a penalty for Napoli in the 67th for his league-best sixth goal of the season after six rounds. Daniele Guastaldello was given his second yellow card for tripping Marek Hamsik at the edge of the area to set up the penalty.
Replays showed that the penalty may have occurred just outside the area. "It was on the line, and the line is part of the penalty area," said Napoli manager Walter Mazzarri, who was sent off in the first half for overly vigorous protesting.
Maradona led Napoli to its only two Serie A titles in 1987 and 1990. At the very least, Napoli is aiming for a top-three finish to get back into the Champions League, having reached the knockout stage last season before being eliminated by eventual champion Chelsea.
Last season, Napoli finished fifth in Serie A. Against an organized Sampdoria squad, Napoli rarely threatened and was fortunate to come away with a win. "Last season we would have lost a match like this," Mazzarri said. "We've improved. We're more aware of our capabilities now. The Champions League helped us grow."
Juventus and Napoli have 16 points each, with head-to-head records the first tiebreaker in Italy. Their first meeting comes in three weeks. Juventus beat Roma and old rival Zdenek Zeman 4-1 on Saturday, while struggling AC Milan gave up a lead in a 1-1 draw at Parma.
Inter Milan and Lazio are tied for third, four points behind the leaders, after each club won Sunday. Inter edged 10-man Fiorentina 2-1 for its first home win of the season and Lazio beat Siena 2-1. In an entertaining match at the San Siro, Inter went ahead with a penalty from Diego Milito in the 17th and a score from Antonio Cassano in the 34th before Brazilian midfielder Romulo pulled one back for Fiorentina in the 40th for his first Serie A goal.
Fiorentina dominated the ball possession until the Tuscan club was reduced to 10 men when defender Gonzalo Rodriguez picked up his second yellow card in the 62nd, while Inter relied on counterattacks, providing an attractive contrast.
Fiorentina held Juve scoreless midweek and again impressed under new coach Vincenzo Montella, despite the loss. In Rome, newly signed Brazilian midfielder Honorato Ederson gave Lazio the lead with a header in the 17th, and Cristian Ledesma added a penalty in the 38th before Massimo Paci pulled one back for Siena in second-half added time.
Including the Europa League, Lazio had gone three matches without scoring. Torino thrashed Atalanta 5-1 after Rolando Bianchi scored twice to go with goals from Alessandro Gazzi, Alen Stevanovic and Danilo D'Ambrosio.
Palermo was nearly as impressive, beating Chievo Verona 4-1 with a hat trick from Fabrizio Miccoli for the Sicilian club's first win of the season — and first points since Gian Piero Gasperini replaced the fired Giuseppe Sanino two weeks ago.
Newly promoted Pescara won its second straight with a 2-1 victory at Cagliari's new stadium, which was opened to fans for the first time. Also, Bologna beat Catania 4-0 with two goals from newly signed Alberto Gilardino.
Earlier in the lunchtime fixture, Udinese and Genoa played to a lackluster 0-0 draw. Udinese manager Francesco Guidolin left top scorer Antonio Di Natale out of his squad for disciplinary reasons and both sides rarely threatened.

Villa scores late for 1-1 draw with West Brom

BIRMINGHAM, England (AP) — Substitute Darren Bent grabbed a late equalizer for Aston Villa in a 1-1 draw with midlands rival West Bromwich Albion on Sunday, denying the in-form visitors a victory that would have lifted them to third place in the Premier League.
Photo: AP Aston Villa's Darren Bent celebrates after scoring against West Bromwich Albion during their English Premier League soccer match at Villa Park Stadium, Birmingham, England, Sunday, Sept. 30, 2012.

The England striker lashed in a left-foot shot from close range in the 80th minute, making a statement to new manager Paul Lambert after being stripped of the captain's armband and then being dropped to the bench following a barren start to the campaign.
"It's obviously been a difficult couple of weeks, losing the captaincy first off then finding out I wasn't playing today," Bent said. "But I managed to score the goal to get a point." Shane Long put the visitors ahead in the 51st when he showed quick reactions to guide home a low finish after Villa defender Ron Vlaar's attempted clearance flew straight at the Ireland international.
While sixth-place West Brom has now made its best start to a top-flight season in 34 years, Villa stayed 15th in the 20-team standings having won just one of its first six games under Lambert since he joined from Norwich in the close season.
But Villa bossed possession for long spells of a match that only sprung into life after Long's goal, his fourth in all competitions this season. "The response of the players to falling behind was excellent — I cannot ask for any more," Lambert said. "Everybody is in it together, we need every player to perform."
Substitute Romelu Lukaku, on loan from Chelsea, nearly won all three points for West Brom when his deflected shot brushed against the post with injury time approaching. But that would have been unfair on Villa, which also went close through Christian Benteke and Joe Bennett after the break.
In the end, they needed record signing Bent to get them out of trouble and he couldn't have picked a better time to show his eye for goal, with England manager Roy Hodgson in the stands. Bent has been ignored in recent months by Hodgson and is no longer a regular with his club either following the summer signing of Benteke from Belgian side Genk.
But he showed he is one of the country's most lethal strikers by taking just 11 minutes to make his mark after coming on, lurking at the back post after a bit of pinball in the area after a corner to steer home a predatory finish.
It was only the fifth goal West Brom has conceded in six games under Steve Clarke, who is defying the critics who said he would struggle to make the step up to manager after 12 years as an assistant coach at Chelsea, West Ham and then Liverpool.
"Having been 1-0 in front and with decent control of the game for long parts, we are a bit disappointed not to win," Clarke said. "But then again, if you said before that we would come away from a difficult away game with a point, then we would have taken that."
In a nice touch by Villa fans, a minute's applause was dedicated to club captain Stiliyan Petrov in the 19th minute — the number of his jersey — with the Bulgarian still out of action after being diagnosed with leukemia in March.
